Description:
Sodium benzoate is the sodium salt of benzoic acid, appearing as a white, crystalline powder or granule. It is odorless (or has a faint odor of benzoin) and readily soluble in water. Chemically, it is represented as C₆H₅COONa. Sodium benzoate is widely used as a preservative in food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics because of its ability to inhibit the growth of mold, yeast, and some bacteria.
