Surgical Spirit (commonly used in the UK and similar to Rubbing Alcohol in other regions):
Surgical Spirit is a clear, colourless, highly flammable liquid with a characteristic strong odour. It is typically a mixture of ethanol (about 90–95%) with small amounts of methanol, methyl salicylate, castor oil, and sometimes diethyl phthalate. It is widely used as a topical antiseptic, skin cleanser, and disinfectant. In medical and household contexts, surgical spirit is applied externally and is not intended for ingestion.
Uses:
-
Antiseptic: Cleansing of skin prior to injections, minor surgery, or medical procedures.
-
Disinfectant: Used to clean surfaces and medical instruments.
-
Skin hardener: Helps prevent bedsores by toughening the skin.
-
Household: Cleaning agent and general disinfectant for first aid kits.
-
Personal care: Sometimes used to remove adhesive residues from plasters or medical dressings.
